What are the most important criteria for getting a chance to do a PHD in physics from a US university?

A2A. I don't know about Physics specifically, but in general, your GPA and letter of recommendations are most important. Research papers can add to application.

I was in engineering, so did not have to take subject GRE, so don't know how much the physics subject GRE matters. But, the regular GRE does not matter much unless the score is low. Not many universities will admit you based on just a perfect GRE score.
